Millet Bisi Bele Bath Recipe
Millet Bisi Bele Bath is a wholesome and nutritious one-pot meal from Karnataka, India, traditionally made with rice and lentils. This version uses millet for a healthier twist, offering a delicious and hearty dish perfect for any meal.
Ingredients
For the Bisi Bele Bath:
- 1/2 cup mixed millets (foxtail, barnyard, or any other variety)
- 1/4 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
- 1/4 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
- 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1 large tomato, chopped
- 1 carrot, diced
- 1/2 cup green beans, chopped
- 1/2 cup green peas
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
For the Bisi Bele Bath Masala:
- 2 tablespoons coriander seeds
- 1 tablespoon chana dal (split Bengal gram)
- 1 tablespoon urad dal (split black gram)
- 6-8 dried red chilies
- 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
- 1/4 cup grated coconut (fresh or desiccated)
- 1/2 teaspoon oil
For Garnish:
- 2 tablespoons ghee
- 10-12 cashew nuts
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
Instructions
Preparing the Bisi Bele Bath Masala:
- Heat 1/2 teaspoon oil in a pan. Add coriander seeds, chana dal, urad dal, dried red chilies, and fenugreek seeds. Roast until fragrant and golden.
- Add grated coconut and roast for another 2-3 minutes.
- Let the mixture cool, then grind it into a fine powder. Set aside.
Cooking the Millet and Lentils:
- Rinse the mixed millets and both dals thoroughly.
- In a pressure cooker, combine the millets, toor dal, masoor dal, and 4 cups of water. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until soft and mushy. Set aside.
Preparing the Bisi Bele Bath:
- Heat 1 tablespoon ghee or oil in a large pot. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft.
- Add diced carrots, green beans, green peas, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are tender.
- Add the cooked millet and dal mixture to the pot. Mix well.
- Stir in the prepared Bisi Bele Bath masala. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if necessary. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
Garnishing and Serving:
- In a small pan, heat 2 tablespoons of ghee. Fry the cashew nuts until golden brown.
- Pour the ghee and cashews over the Bisi Bele Bath. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with a side of raita, papad, or a pickle of your choice.
